  • About SmartClear

There are a couple of addons out there which create a "/clear" command to erase all the text in a chat window. Those have the disadvantage (IMHO) that they also erase all the scrollback text. Personally, I want to clear all the currently displayed text, but be able to view it again if I want to. So I wrote this addon. "Clearing" the window only forces all the text to instantly fade out, as if you had waited a few mintues.

"/clear" clears all chat windows.
"/clear N" clears chat window number N.
"/clear print" prints each chat window's number to that chat window, so you have a reference.
"/clear <any other text>" print out a help statement like this one.

Huge credit goes to Maldivia of Sargeras realm, who gave me the trick behind how SetTimeVisible and SetFadeDuration interact in 1.9 and older, and to Iriel of the UI forums, who pointed out the cycle trick that needed to be made for 1.10.

  • This isn't working for me and not sure why. Actually the slash command /clear print will put the window number in for me but typing /clear does not clear any windows nor does /clear n. Any suggestions?

  • Nothing comes to mind other than maybe one of your other addons is messing with fade timing. If you're up for figuring out which other addon it is, here's how:

    1) Make a backup copy of your WTF folder.
    2) At the char selection screen, click "AddOns" to bring up the addon list. Disable all of them except SmartClear. Login, make sure it works. Log back out.
    3) Enable half of your mods. Login, see if it works, log back out. If it works, then disable those and enable the *other* half. Log back in and see if it's broken. It should be.
    4) Now you know which half of your addons are breaking this one. Repeat the process to narrow the list in half again, and then again. Cutting the number of possible addons in half each time will go very quickly.
    5) You should, in theory, end up with two addons enabled: SmartClear and "the other one", where enabling the other one will break SC. Toggle "the other one" on, make sure SC breaks, toggle it off, make sure SC works. Then tell me the name of "the other one". :-)
    6) Last step is to exit the game, delete the WTF folder, and move your WTF backup copy back into place. Then your list of enabled addons will all go back to the way you had it before starting all the fiddling around.

It's a lot of logging in and out, I'll totally understand if you decide it's not worth the time. :-)
