  • About Pawn
  •

Pawn assesses the value of items for you to make it easy to decide which items are better than others. It's similar in purpose to mods such as Tank Points, but completely customizable, and applicable to any class and situation. You can use it to help create multiple gear sets, or decide whether to take that weapon with higher DPS or the one with more crit rating, or decide between a necklace with MP5 and one with bonus healing.

Pawn is a mod for hardcore World of Warcraft players—you may not like it if you're not the sort of person who agonizes over stats and itemization. You can use premade Pawn "scale tags" that other people make and post on forums to set up Pawn for your spec without any extra effort. And, if you're the kind of person who goes through Wowhead and Lootzor looking for exactly the items you want for your gear sets, builds Excel spreadsheets, installs TheoryCraft, reads Elitist Jerks... well, Pawn might just be right up your alley.

  • See the readme file included with Pawn for more information on getting the most out of it.

Check out the Pawn scales that people have posted to the Unofficial Pawn forums.

Not sure if this is Bagnon or Pawn causing these issues, but Bagnon worked before I installed Pawn. I get the following any time I mouse over the Bagnon frame:

And if I enable tool tips I get the following whenever I roll over my bags:

The final release of Pawn 1.1 is here! This version works fully on both the live realms and Wrath of the Lich King. Besides the Wrath compatibility and support for new types of items, the big change in this version is the Compare tab. Right-click on an item link window or an item being rolled for, or hover over an item in someone's inventory and press "]", and Pawn will give you a stat-by-stat breakdown of the two items, and clearly show you which one is better based on your selected scale.

Pawn 1.1 beta 1 is now up on CurseForge, and it's the first version of Pawn to be fully compatible with both the live 2.4 realms and the Wrath of the Lich King beta. In addition to the Wrath compatibility, which was a heroic effort in and of itself (special thanks to everyone who submitted bug reports!), the big new feature in 1.1 is the Compare tab, which lets you drill down into the details of two items, showing you exactly how they differ and why one is better than the other. Check it out if you like living on the edge. I've been using 1.1 myself on the live realms for weeks and weeks now, so I don't actually anticipate that the beta will last long; a 1.1 release shouldn't be too far off.

This addon is great. I decided on a whim to look for an addon kind of like tankpoints but configurable and I'm very pleased that there is one.

    Glad you like it!

I've changed my mind a bit about Pawn 1.1; I'm now thinking that I'll go ahead and release version 1.1 for both the live realms and the Wrath beta, since Wrath is still a few months off, and a few months is a long time to go with no new Pawn updates. So, if you feel like testing an alpha of Pawn 1.1, head on over to CurseForge. It's starting to look pretty good on the live realms now (and probably still sucks hard on Wrath).

Hey after upgrading to 1.0.4 some of my scales aren't appearing on tooltips anymore. I didn't have a chance to open Pawn to have a look (I was tanking ZA until late) but it seems like the scales I set prior to 1.0.3 are still showing up, but those I set using the 1.0.3 client aren't.

I'll try to take a look after the realms come up.

  • July 31, 2008, 01:55AM (1 month, 1 week ago)

Actually, one thing to check is to make sure that the "show this scale in item tooltips" option is checked for all scales that you want to show up. (On the Scales tab, choose the scale you want to modify from the dropdown, and then look for that checkbox at the bottom.) I think I made it default to checked for all new scales, but I'm not 100% sure. That could be your problem.

  • July 29, 2008, 04:24PM (1 month, 1 week ago)

Okay. If you haven't turned the option on already, please turn on the "user interface errors" option on the Interface Options screen. That'll give you a few details if Pawn has an error; having those details will help me track down problems.

I've posted Pawn 1.1 ALPHA 1, but it's meant for Wrath of the Lich King. I recommend sticking with the 1.0.4 version. In fact, just so you don't get too enticed, I'm not even going to tell you what's new just yet. :)

Hmmm, maybe alphas don't show up on the main page anymore. You can get the Pawn alphas here:

I'm still getting the following error while using Pawn 1.0.4 in WoTLK beta:

Thanks for the report. I should theoretically have a spot in the beta soon thanks to WoWInterface; once I'm in, I'll get things working better.

Check out the Pawn 1.1 alpha that I posted. I still can't test it on beta yet, but hey, it really can't be any worse than before. :)

Thanks for the report (with usable error information <3). I've posted Pawn 1.0.4 to fix this issue. It should be available on the site shortly.

For curious casters, the formula for determining the spell power of an item in WoW 3.0 given the amount of healing and spell damage it has in WoW 2.4 is as follows:

    Spell power = .7 * spell damage + .3 * healing

Round fractions down. This formula is unlikely to change before WoW 3.0's release.

Pawn 1.0.3 is out. This is a "preparing for Wrath of the Lich King" release. I made a few changes to make it hopefully behave properly on the Wrath beta, including support for the new spell power stat. This version also works on the live realms. If you're a caster class in the beta, you will probably need to maintain slightly different scales between your live and beta characters; see the Wrath section of the readme file for further details on itemization changes. I'm not in the Wrath beta yet, so if you run into problems using Pawn in the beta with this version, let me know, and I'll see if I can make another update.

Is there any way you could have an option where Pawn shows you what gems (according to the values you assigned) it would recommend per item?
