World of Warcraft

WOWDB.com launch a success

Posted Sep 17, 2008 by net

Greetings everyone.

I am the founder of Curse and I would like to share a few words with you today.
Yesterday, we launched our new World of Warcraft Database, www.wowdb.com. WOWDB represents 8 months of hard work from our development team, and is the product of collaboration among many World of Warcraft players.

Today I have great news. In the past 24-hours, we have already had more than 50,000 visitors. This is encouraging, because we believe that WOWDB will benefit all of us, the World of Warcraft community. As most of you know, all the major players in this market have struggled with innovation recently. We've focused on bringing that innovation back to the game database space, by creating some of the features found on WOWDB, and will continue to do so with new community-driven features each week.

Since launch, we have received more than 400 emails containing bugs, congratulations, feedback. I want to thank all of you who took the time to report the problems you see, and for offering us great ideas for new features.

We are taking care of all of them, one by one.

We designed WOWDB to be as accessible as possible to the World of Warcraft community. We have enhanced standards greatly, and added many new features that can't be found anywhere else:

Search Assist
Interactive Previews
Wish Lists
Book marking
Characters
And Wiki-integration

More than 120,000 people are using the Curse Client right now, and contributing all the data you see on WOWDB. I'll let you guys imagine what type of infrastructure we had to build to be able to process the sheer volume of data we receive every second.

WOWDB is a great opportunity for everyone in the WoW Community. It will drive innovation that will result in a better user experience, and bring some real competition to what was once a monopoly. I have to say that I have been very impressed by how the community started right away to interact on the site. More than 10,000 of you registered today and nearly 500 comments have been posted since launch.

Your participation to the life of our community is greatly appreciated.
I am myself a longtime MMO gamers, passionated about this industry.

Thanks,

Hubert

Well, I wish Curse Client did not lag my computer somtimes. If it did not, then I would use it.

And it looks amazingly similar to wowhead. What a coincidence!

I applaud you for trying to help the community.

I feel however, that your dig at other sites was childish - i.e., to quote, "...all the major players in this market are owned by the same company. For months now the innovation on these sites has been down to 0."

Another site that has been mentioned here in these comments recently added a number of innovations.

Let your product and its quality speak for itself; half-lidded opinions like this cheapen your attempts, in my eyes

*shrugs* In the end it will be the community support that determines which lives and which dies. That vague insult I quoted helped seal my decision as to which site will receive my continued support, for what it's worth...

I agree, I don't think that part was necessary.

Did you code all the system of WoWDB from skratch or is there so SDK available somewhere? Your WoWDB looks a lot like WoWHead on the core side.

Also, did you buy the old WoWDB ?

Other than these question: great job with WoWDB very nice product !

We coded everything from scratch. We bought the domain name www.wowdb.com tho.

    thanks for your reply.

One last question if I may, is the guild Curse managing the curse.com website or are they completely different entities now ?

I am the former guild master of Curse. I left about 2 years ago to focus more on the website.
The guild Curse does not exist anymore, unfortunately.

Me neither... I'm sorry for sounding "cocky", but if your PC is lagging because of the Client, you should consider upgrading, or at least doing a cleanup of badware.

the thing is, most of the websites actually ARE owned by the same company. it's just a company with sub-companies and parent companies and they change their name every time too much attention gets drawn to that fact.

I also found the tone to be distasteful. It smacked of juvenile competitiveness, not professional pride.

While I lost respect for the person, (and to a lesser degree, but still, by association, the organization) I will let the merits of the 'product' stand for themselves. And that will guide my choice of sites to support.

If I were to condemn every group with a childish leader, I would not be able to play WoW or keep a job, much less live in the United States. :)

Thanks for your replies, I was a bit curious :).

By the way, are you looking for english and french speaking people with good knowledge of computers for any kind of job? News publishing, Community management, or else?
