Dungeon Keeper MMO Announced

Kotaku is reporting that Electronic Arts and NetDragon Websoft Inc. have announced a licensing agreement, in which NetDragon will develop Dungeon Keeper Online -- an MMO based on EA's IP "Dungeon Keeper."

The details are fairly slim so far, but one unfortunate piece of information is available.  And, well... it also makes Dungeon Keeper Online unavailable to most of you reading this.  Part of the agreement gives NetDragon Websoft Inc. an exclusive license to develop and distribute the game throughout the Greater China region, including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.  Hope may still remain, though -- the release is carefully worded to state exclusive rights in those areas.  Maybe if it's successful we'll see it in the states and Europe at a later date.

"We are delighted to enter into an agreement with EA in the development of our first 3D MMORPG. Our partnership with this internationally renowned game developer is proof of our capabilities in game operations and development as well as a reflection of our market reputation," said Mr. Liu Dejian, Chairman and Executive Director of NetDragon on a Kotaku press release. "Capitalizing our strength to create a strong gaming experience, powerful operating platform and unmatched expertise within China's online game market, we are confident that Dungeon Keeper Online will not only become successful in the Greater China region but also achieve remarkable results overseas."

What do you think, will we see Dungeon Keeper Online in North America and Europe some day?

I don't think pressure from EA is likely considering the market and also EAs current development approach of allowing developers time to refine products.

They'll probably butcher Dungeon Keeper. Dungeon Keeper was fun.. DK2 was great I spent countless hours designing and building dungeons... but most likely they'll have a limited time schedule.. will get pressured by EA.. and release a subpar game with expensive updates.. or there is a 10% chance they could do it.. but I'm not gonna bet that they would get it right.

What that means is that EA wants to distribute it through Europe and America, which makes sense. They don't have a strong representation in Asia, where as NetDragon are established.
